Folkemødet 2014 – the Scandinavian way of politics

Imagine a multi-day rock festival like Woodstock and replace guitar solos, Jimi Hendrix and Joe Cocker with political debates, Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Connie Hedegaard. Sounds weird? Well, we think that this is a charming way of bringing together politicians and people. A political festival like Folkemødet (= ”Meeting of the folk”) is probably imaginable in Scandinavia only. Or can you imagine David Cameron or Angela Merkel running around on their own and without bodyguards, shaking hands and making small talk?

The fourth Folkemødet took place between the 12th and 15th June this year on the island of Bornholm. Based on the idea of bringing together top-tier politicians with the people that actually elected them, the festival has since the first edition in 2011 grown steadily. It is currently the most important political platform outside the Danish parliament. This year, 87.000 people took the chance to present their companies, make a statement for their organisations or simply chitchat with their politicians in a very informal surrounding.
EHRENBERG Kommunikation was represented with two tents and a ship in the harbour of Allinge, Bornholm, and hosted different political events during Folkemødet’s four days. And many politicians from the entire political spectrum as well as stakeholders from different industries joined us for informal conversation and networking. The most surprising special guest at the EHRENBERG location certainly was Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

Beside the traditional Get-Together, EHRENBERG Kommunikation also arranged several debates and open-air seminars during Folkemødet. A new feature in this year’s program was “The Hot Chair”. The concept is simple:  A high-profile personality is placed on a chair and answers questions from the audience. Thus, e.g. the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, answered a wide range of questions, from EMS vehicles to the composition of the future EU Commission.
EHRENBERG Kommunikation would like to thank everybody for a wonderful Folkemødet 2014. Already now, we look forward to Folkemødet 2015 and hope to see you there!
